The other About page is totally true but it’s old. I left full-time work almost four years ago and at first the plan was to just take care of the kids and get back to the career (urban planning) later. That’s shifted: I’ve been doing freelance consulting from home (it really got rolling here). It’s a much better balance kid-wise but comes with a whole host of other challenges like the ‘feast or famine’ reality of consulting. I pay for childcare when I have work but I also have to pay for childcare to make the time to find work.
For me, the ideal balance would be to have enough consulting work that I could be busy six hours a day from Monday to Friday. Kids in school = me working. Kids out of school = me not working. These jobs don’t exist so I’m trying to make one. For now, Malli’s school day is only 2.5 hours long. I’ve got some time to build up the business before he hits grade one. If any of you out in blog-land need a minor variance from a zoning bylaw or a touch of regional growth management policy analysis just leave it in the comments and I’ll get right on it.
